New European Project Horizon CSA Fortuna

Horizon CSA Fortuna: future innovations to reduce pesticide use in agriculture

The European project Future innovation for pesticide use reduction in agriculture (FORTUNA, 01/2024 - 12/2027) brings together a consortium of 11 organizations from European Union countries (universities, research institutes and technical institutes) coordinated by the Julius Kuhn Institute.

This project is a coordination and support action (CSA) of the Horizon Europe program, in response to the call for tenders Towards research and innovation beyond farm to fork strategy targets for pesticides after 2030 (HORIZON-CL6-2023-FARM2FORK-01-4). FORTUNA aims to identify and analyze the methods, tools and mechanisms available from a biological/ecological, technological and socio-economic point of view, which make it possible to significantly reduce the use and risks associated with chemical pesticides and, ultimately, to implement new pesticide-free agricultural practices. Results and strategies will be discussed with stakeholders throughout the food and supply chain, potentially contributing to a transition towards reduced dependence on chemical pesticides while promoting satisfactory yields and enabling food security. One of the main aims of this process is to identify strategies that present a lower risk of productivity and profitability losses than other strategies, and to target long-term prospects.
As part of the FORTUNA project, DEPE is responsible for a specific task (Task 4.1) which aims to identify knowledge gaps and research needs by mobilizing scenarios for European agriculture without chemical pesticides in 2050 in multi-stakeholder and multi-disciplinary workshops.
