WHO ARE WE?

WHO ARE WE?

Like all research organizations, the French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment’s (INRAE) primary mission is to produce scientific knowledge in its specialist fields. Expertise, dissemination of scientific culture and contribution of knowledge to public policy and social debate are also important aspects of the Institute's activities.

The expectations placed on INRAE by public authorities and society are constantly growing, given the current challenges facing agriculture, food and the environment. Since the end of the 1990s, INRAE has been providing expertise in response to these challenges. They are entrusted to the Directorate of Collective Scientific Assessment, Foresight and Advanced Studies (DEPE), which reports to the Directorate for Science for Policy (DGD EAPP).

DEPE's mission is to provide the scientific insights needed to answer the questions posed by public authorities and society in the fields of agriculture, food and the environment. In addition to coordinating collective scientific assessment, advanced studies and foresight, the DEPE teams work upstream of operations to identify weak signals on subjects that could structure future political, scientific and societal debates, and to promote all the work carried out in various political, scientific and societal circles, notably through training, via dedicated research schools. This site presents the DEPE and all its activities.

Previously carried out in separate structures, INRA's collective scientific assessment and foresight activities were brought together in 2010 in a Direction of collective scientific assessment, foresight and advanced studies (DEPE), reporting to the Institute's President. When INRAE was created on January 1, 2020, this delegation became one of the two departments of the General Directorate for Expertise and Public Policy Support/ Directorate for Science for Policy (an equivalent structure did not exist at IRSTEA).

The DEPE conducts three types of operation: collective scientific assessment, advanced studies and foresight, mostly at the request of public authorities (ministries, national agencies, etc.). 3 to 5 collective scientific expertise, study and prospective projects are coordinated on a permanent basis.
