The expectations placed on INRAE by public authorities and society are constantly growing, given the current challenges facing agriculture, food and the environment. Since the end of the 1990s, INRAE has been providing expertise in response to these challenges. They are entrusted to the Directorate of Collective Scientific Assessment, Foresight and Advanced Studies (DEPE), which reports to the Directorate for Science for Policy (DGD EAPP).

DEPE's mission is to provide the scientific insights needed to answer the questions posed by public authorities and society in the fields of agriculture, food and the environment. In addition to coordinating collective scientific assessment, advanced studies and foresight, the DEPE teams work upstream of operations to identify weak signals on subjects that could structure future political, scientific and societal debates, and to promote all the work carried out in various political, scientific and societal circles, notably through training, via dedicated research schools.
