The importance of soils in ecosystems and the dangers associated with their degradation are getting increasing attention. In this context, scientists propose various conceptual frameworks for defining soil quality, covering notions of quality, fertility, health, threat, security, function, service, etc. On which indicators are these notions based? How can they be implemented for public policies? Few scientific studies have provided a comprehensive approach to soil quality indicators and their operationality in all contexts and land uses (agricultural, forestry, urban, natural).

This study, conducted by the Directorate for the collective scientific assessment, foresight and studies (DEPE) of INRAE, establishes a state of the art of scientific knowledge, laying the foundations for a soil quality indicator system. It highlights the conditions for its relevance and effectiveness, as well as the challenges to overcome for its implementation. The study also identifies the already available resources that can be mobilised by all users for better soil quality preservation, and the research needed to reduce its uncertainty and improve its appropriation.

The conference preceeded by a in-person event from 11am to 12pm: La fresque du sol (a fun, collaborative tool designed to disseminate a common language about how soils work and the issues involved in preserving them)
